PanelsI began making these panels after spending time in an architecture program in Southern California. The work there forcefully impacted my understanding of form and shape, as well as vigorously stimulating my mind in new ways. When I returned to the studio in San Francisco, I began making cut wood panels with cement infill, and then coating the surfaces with trowelled on graphite which I then rubbed with soft graphite sticks. Following a subsequent trip to Japan, I started experimenting with melted wax, combining it with paper, and other materials. The cast wax, paper and cement panels shown here are the result. While the wax is molten I floated pigments, rust, metal particles, and various other materials letting them settle and become “entombed” I then developed a method of combining the cooled wax shapes in cement. I made hundreds of these panels. The pieces shown here range from the very simple to more complex compositions. |
